Columnist and Assistant News Editor/motorsports announcer
Ace Lane Jr. has carried on a wonderful tradition of being an auto racing photographer in his family, a craft which started with his father - Ace Lane Senior.
* Racing photography became Ace Lane Senior's enjoyable sideline occupation beginning in the late-1940s into the 1970s. He filmed at all of the top speedways, for organizations such as NASCAR, USAC, ARDC and URC; and was official track photographer at New Jersey's East Windsor, Flemington and Old Bridge Speedways. His photos were seen in all of the major racing publications; and used in regular daily newspapers and magazines as well. And, as soon as he was old enough, son Ace JUNIOR was by his side and learning the trade.
* The very first edition of Area Auto Racing News in June 1963 featured a front page photo filmed by Ace Lane Sr. of the aftermath of a major crash at Flemington Speedway. His photos became a constant in that publication - which started as a four-page, regional paper. Today, it averages 88 pages at the height of the summer racing season with a weekly readership of 85,000 around the country. In the paper's formative years, Ace Lane Senior's photos were key ingredients to the publication. Today, son Ace Jr.'s pictures are widely used in each edition of Area Auto Racing News.
* Ace Lane Sr. was presented with a award from AARN publisher and founder Len Sammons in December 1972, recognizing his dedication and belief in the publication during its formative years.
* Ace Lane Sr. was honored by the Eastern Motorsport Press Association; and that organization's annual "Excellence in Auto Racing Photography" award is named in his memory. He has also been inducted into the Halls of Fame of the National Old Timers Auto Racing Club and the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club; and is a member of the DIRT Motorsports Hall of Fame as recipient of the Leonard J. Sammons Jr. award for "Outstanding Contributions to Motorsports."
Sadly, Ace Sr. died of complications from a stroke at a young age 54, in January 1973.
* In the years since his father's untimely passing Ace Lane JUNIOR has distinguished himself as one of the sport's premier photographers, and has been recognized by his peers with over 100 special awards. One that he particularly treasures is from the Eastern Motorsport Press Association, which honored him with that "Excellence in Auto Racing Photography" award named for dad Ace Lane SENIOR in recognition of his stature in auto racing.
* In 1998, Ace Jr. authored a hard cover book "Ace, The Auto Racing Photo Journal of Ace Lane Sr." which documented his father's motorsports photography career. It was published by PDI (Program Dynamics) in Flemington, N.J., and is in demand as a "must-have" book that has been sold around the country and has received high reviews.
* Carrying on the family tradition, Ace Lane Jr. became track photographer at Flemington following his father's passing and continued at that post until the track's closing in 2000. He was also official track photographer at N.J.'s New Egypt Speedway in the 1980s.
* In 2003, Ace Lane Jr. was named official track photographer for the NASCAR-sanctioned, nationally-recognized Wall Township Speedway in New Jersey.
* Ace Jr. is one of the senior photographers with Area Auto Racing News, and covers a variety of divisions and weekly and major events for the paper with his camera in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and New England. His photos have been featured on several front covers of Pocono Raceway NASCAR Winston Cup Weekend program magazines.
He is chairman of the Hall of Fame committee of the Eastern Motorsport Press Association; a past officer of the North Jersey Press Club; and willingly offers his time and expertise to mentor those aspiring to a career in photography.
In 1974, Ace Jr. was one of the four founding members (with local New Jersey Modified race drivers Sammy Beavers and Mike Grbac, and Area Auto Racing News writer Ken Kuhlman) of the "Committee of Auto Racing Supporters" (CARS) that annually raised thousands of dollars for the Matheny School for Cerebral Palsied Children in Peapack, N. J. through the 1990s. He remains dedicated to the school's children, annually visiting them during the annual Christmas gathering where presents are distributed to the youngsters by racing participants.
Like his father, Ace Lane Jr. continues to define excellence in motorsports photography. It's truly his life's work, and passion.
